Chapter 7: Jolted

THE MIGHTY ELECTRICAL SHOCK that frazzled the water all around him was meant to knock him out. Thundersong found himself thrashing in a puddle of steaming seawater, jangled in every nerve, but his instinctual draw on the surging power had saved his blushes – and those of his Riders, he realised after a frantic glance over his shoulder.

As the silver fish seethed around him, seeking purchase for their teeth anywhere upon his body, he let loose with the pent-up lightning inside of him. One favour returned with gusto. For several dozen feet around his body, limbs and wings, the fish sizzled merrily in their own juices. Rather tempting smell. Fish barbecue a la Thundersong. However, the pleasant aroma had no sooner reached his nostrils than the rest of the huge school of fish turned on their erstwhile friends with carnivorous glee.

He bellowed, “Departing swiftly. Hold on!”

With the right motivation, a fast-moving Dragon could practically walk on water.

As he skimmed across the surface, he called, “Riders, check?”

“We’re fine. Sore but fine,” Azania called. “Baby didn’t like that. Kicking like crazy, which I’ll take for a good sign. Gazdonl?”

“I bit through my tongue. Nothing serious.”

“Grrrr – still got most of it?”

“Aye.”

“I’ll hear no complaints unless you’re actually dying, harrr-harrr-hurgh!”

“That reminds me, I believe I have you to thank for saving my life yesterday,” Gazdonl said. “I wasn’t breathing … and you, uh …”

“It was Thundersong’s very first kiss,” the Queen giggled.

“Azania –”

“Makes you two boys sweethearts.”

“Azania! Grr! You’re so inappropriate.”

“But ever so funny,” she gurgled merrily. “Promise I won’t tell if you don’t.”

“Promise I won’t step on you by accident.”

Azania pouted, “Oh Dragon, you’re such a big meanie.”

Having put a good distance between them and the school of overly friendly silver fish, Thundersong put down and got his snooze-swim rhythm going again. Two hours later, the silver fish began to rise from the deeps. He swam faster but found the silver gang were faster still and ever so keen to cosy up to him and become bosom buddies. Time to take off again.

Four further night flights later, a pristine dawn warmed the top of a very grumpy Dragon’s head. Magical morning. The ocean lay as still as glass. Sunrise? Orange-tinged fires gleamed off the still surface with the brilliance of a furnace’s heart, igniting the whole world with the magic of fiery newness. What a day! Tilting his muzzle away from that retina-excoriating glare, he observed that the ocean’s colour had also returned to its normal teal, meaning that they had made it past the dangerous Ardukill Abyss with only a beastly jolt by which to remember the experience. He swam on steadily, aware of a slight tugging upon his body that suggested a shift in the current’s direction. Odd. Where had he felt something like this before?

A couple of hours later, he woke with a snort.

≈Thundersong, o Thundersong, where are you? Why do you not reply?≈

Sirensong! How could he have missed her message – unless he had been flying
